Star Wars & Animal Liberation

I may or may not have seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi three times already in theaters. Okay, I definitely did. Once in normal 2D, once in 2D Imax, and once in 3D. For those of you who haven't seen it.. you really should! But you may not want to read the rest of this post... yet! There aren't terrible spoilers, but if you want to go in completely "clean", wait until after you've seen the movie to read this.
So, I LOVE Star Wars. I have ever since my husband introduced me to the series. But, guys... my love for Star Wars grew so much when I saw The Last Jedi! There are so many animal liberation/vegan undertones and themes! In the beginning, Luke drinks milk from the breast of one of the animals (called a Thala-Siren) on his island, and it is made to be a pretty gross scene. Rey is obviously disturbed and even looks away when the animal makes eye contact with her. Later on the island, we see Chewie, who is about to eat a cooked Porg. Some Porgs (which, by the way, are SO CUTE) gather around him looking very sad and pouty as he is about to eat one of their kind, maybe even a family member. He scares them off, and goes to take a bite- but there's one left, watching him, very sad again. Chewie once again scares him off, but can't bring himself to actually eat the creature. When I saw this scene, I could't believe it... first the milk, and now the Porg meat? My heart was exploding.
Later in the movie, Finn and Rose are on a planet called Canto Bight, a very wealthy planet. Maybe the wealthiest in the galaxy. When Rose expresses her disgust for the planet, she tells Finn to "look closer". When we do get to take a closer look, we see horse-like creatures called Fathiers, who are being used for racing-based gambling. The Fathiers are being zapped and abused, and a child even tries to stop the abuse of the poor creatures. As Finn and Rose attempt to escape from the planet, they break the Fathiers out of their stables and set them free into the wild, which Rose claims made it all "worth it". I swear, this movie was just made for me 😉
In the final scenes on the mineral-rich planet Crait, we get to meet Vulptices. A Vulptex looks very much like a fox here on earth, except it is made of crystals. In the movie they are referred to as "Crystal Critters". Well, these critters play a huge role in the survival of the Resistance during the Battle of Crait. I mean, really, I don't think they could've escaped without them! I don't want to give too much away, but they play an extremely important role!

As you can tell, I am so proud of Star Wars for the animal liberation themes throughout the movie. I've read that Daisy Ridley (Rey) is vegan! I don't know how true that is, so don't quote me, but multiple sources have said that she is. I have a feeling that 2018 is going to be a big year for veganism. If you want to know more about veganism, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Thank you Star Wars, for shedding some light on animal liberation and showing how powerful we can be when we speak up for those who can't speak up for themselves!
